Concrete epoxy is used to structurally restore the old appearance of any surfaces. It is used to fill up concrete cracks effectively. In some cases, it is much stronger compared to the concrete itself if it is properly applied. In fact, some specialized concrete epoxy can also be used to mend a broken concrete object. These specialized products are not normally found in any home centers.
Epoxies are also used to prevent water from leaking out a concrete crack. Once the epoxies are properly applied, the surface will return to its pre-cracked strength. Many times, the restored surface is more durable than the surface around it.
Because concrete epoxies have high tensile strength, high bonding strength and high compressive strength, they are normally recommended to repair manholes, sewers, concrete tunnels, delaminated concretes and concrete foundation crack. On the contrary, concrete epoxies are not suitable for concrete block walls and for floor cracks.
Concrete epoxies generally have been formulated with different viscosities to restore various sizes of crack. Typically, they are enclosed in a 300cc by 150 cc 2:1 cartridges. Though it is not easy to determine the structural problem of the surface, there are some rules that might guide you. For instance, if the wall crack is at least a half-inch wide, then it may be a structural crack. Also, horizontal cracks are more likely to be structural problem.
Furthermore, cracks with lots of severe diagonal lines especially those that begin at the interior corner are frequently a structural problem. On the contrary, diagonal cracks that begin at the window's corner or the lower portion of the foundation and are less than half an inch wide are most likely not a structural problem. If you still have difficulty determining the nature of the crack, you can hire an engineer to do the job for you.
Concrete epoxy generally requires more effort to work with. More often the crack should be chisel out and a gel coating should be install as an outer form. Additionally, you have to install little injection ports before squeezing the concrete epoxy out. Before a concrete epoxy is applied, the crack that needs to be repaired should be fully dried. Normally, epoxies are applied in just three steps: attaching the surface ports, sealing the crack surface and injecting the concrete epoxy into the surface crack. With regular practice and the right equipments, the cracks can be successfully fixed.
Again, epoxies are available in two component materials. The components will mix while they are placed into the crack. The epoxy will flow smoothly because it is in a liquid form. It will form a hard and durable material after mixing to strengthen the wall. Once the concrete epoxy is cured, the surface crack will not give other problems. The concrete epoxy will become semi-rigid gel after 20 minutes or so. And after several hours, the epoxy will begin to become hard and strong. The final cure strengths of concrete epoxy are normally achieved after seven days.
