Everyone Makes Mistakes

Everyone knows that even the most proficient designer can sometimes make mistakes. However, in order to minimize the effects with respect to your deck design, there are a few techniques that you can use to assure that the construction of your deck is sturdy. They have been used for years by builders; making it possible for you to enjoy the deck even when some small errors have been made.

1. The first thing is to try your best to install the footings and posts of your deck precisely as it was called for on the drawings. However, sometimes very small design imperfections may occur; like the posts being slightly off center by a half inch. Although this is usually not a big deal in terms of safety and strength, anyone who may be viewing it may consider it to be a huge negative element that may be a weak point in the entire structure.

2. Another good strategy for the average homeowner to use is to build your deck using pieces of wood that have not been previously cut exactly to size. This allows the builder to assemble most of the frame; trimming everything to size at the last minute. This method eliminates the possibility of measuring and then cutting any of the boards too short. It will also automatically correct any dimensions that may be off in the plan.

3. Posts that are assembled as part of this structure are generally be trimmed to the exact height requirement; prior to the beam installation. Instead of doing this, allow the posts to extend upwards. Create a beam of two or more pieces of lumber that is attached to sides of the vertical posts with lag screws. Make sure that your beam is absolutely level before tightening up the hardware. After you are completely confident that everything is the way it should be, then it is okay to cut the posts off so that they are flush with the top of the beam. In this way you can correct any small mistakes that have been made during the progression of your work.

4. Install the railing after most of the deck construction has been done. Some people choose to attach the rail in the middle of building phase. However, it is much better to construct the deck first and then add the railing as a separate step. Many design flaws can be minimized if you keep the construction of the deck separate from the building of the handrails.

5. The stairway should also be tackled as an individual project. This means that it is the last thing that should be built; adding the stairway posts and landing slab after the deck has been fully completed. Use screws in place of nails. This will make it easier to change the angle of the stairway steps; if needed.
