In the modern age of swimming pool design there are virtually unlimited ways to incorporate an automatic pool cover into the build. In the past, you were pretty much limited to a plain rectangle pool with an industrial looking aluminum lid to cover the recessed mechanism housing. This mind-set has become a thing of the past.
No longer do the tracks have to be mounted to the underside of the pool coping. The new standard in the industry is to mount a receiver piece (encapsulation) on the pool bond beam before the coping is installed. This receiver then accepts the track and is held in place by a marriage groove after a plastic shim is inserted. This method has two main benefits. The first is the elimination of tracks pulling loose from the coping. The second allows for thinner and less dense coping stones. Using this type of encapsulated track allows for a pool in pool design as well. The swimming pool can be of freeform design but with the benefit of a below deck and hidden pool cover system. The outside perimeter of the swimming pool remains rectangular with a step-down onto the lower deck surface around the swimming pool. In effect, you have a picture frame around your pool.
Extreme cantilever is another option. With this method, a free form design is maintained throughout the build. This is accomplished by building the pool as you would for a pool in pool application and then with forms placed from the track to the edge of the freeform pool, concrete decking is poured to finished elevation. After the forms are removed there is a four to six inch notch for the cover to travel through. In some cases the tracks have been as far as four feet from the water's edge.
Recessed housings are being covered with coping or deck material for a more appealing look. These stones are held in place by heavy duty brackets placed at predetermined intervals to accommodate the width and length of the lid material. If the material being used is thinner than 2 inches or is brick or flagstone, a pan or tray system can be used to secure the materials to. Using this type of heavy walk -on lids allows for the hidden leading edge option.
The leading edge of the cover system can be completely tucked under the recessed housing lid by using custom designed brackets that extend towards the water's edge. The lowered bond beam is then notched during construction stage, to allow for a pocket for the rigid leading edge of the cover to tuck into. Water level needs to be taken into consideration during construction to keep the leading edge from dragging through the water. This can be accomplished by the lowering of the skimmers one to two inches from normal elevation.
Negative edge or vanishing edge pools can have covers also. The tracking is placed on top of the spill wall if it slopes away from the pool and vertically on the back side of the wall if it slopes toward the pool. Spacers are used under the track to allow the water to flow freely under the tracks.
Any combination of the above can and have been used to design truly unique waterscapes. From beach entry, waterfalls, grottos and spas with spill-overs, your imagination is the only limitation when it comes to incorporating an automatic swimming pool cover into your pool design.
